PRP Injections

Platelet-rich Plasma
In some patients who have persistent pain despite non-surgical treatments, biologic injections can be helpful. The most common biologic injection is platelet-rich plasma (PRP). PRP concentrates the part of your blood with growth factors to help your body heal. The process begins with taking a sample of your blood. It is spun around in a centrifuge, separating the platelets, plasma, and red and white blood cells. The platelets and growth factors are concentrated and mixed with some of the plasma. This mixture is called "platelet-rich plasma.” Dr. Walcott injects the PRP under ultrasound guidance into the damaged area.
There has been extensive research on PRP, yet there is still a lot that is unknown. Research is ongoing as to the effectiveness of this treatment in different conditions. The strongest data shows that PRP is most effective in treating chronic tendon injuries (Achilles tendonitis, patellar tendonitis, and lateral epicondylitis). Some data supports treating mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis with PRP as well. Discuss with Dr. Walcott the risks, benefits, and effectiveness of PRP for your condition.
Platelet-rich plasma is not covered by commercial health insurance.
