MEET MARIE WALCOTT, MD

Shoulder pain and trauma are common, especially as you age. Over time, natural wear and tear in the shoulder and the rotator cuff can lead to persistent discomfort.

As an athlete and former competitive rower, I understand the impact shoulder discomfort can have on daily activities and overall quality of life. As a surgeon and shoulder specialist, I can diagnose the source of your shoulder pain and provide treatment options. The good news is that with appropriate treatment, shoulder pain can improve, allowing you to return to the activities that are most important to you.

What is shoulder pain?

The shoulder is the most flexible joint in the body enabling a wide range of movements including, forward flexion, abduction, adduction, external rotation, internal rotation, and 360-degree circumduction. This extensive mobility leaves your shoulder vulnerable to many injuries and conditions that cause pain.

Because the socket of the shoulder is shallow, there is no intrinsic bony stability in the shoulder; thus it is highly susceptible to injury. The shoulder joint is supported by muscles, tendons, and ligaments which are also subject to injury and overuse.

Shoulder discomfort or pain can make mundane daily activities, lifestyle pursuits, or sports difficult, tedious, or even impossible.
